How safe do you feel in your neighbourhood?

The Office for The Home National Statistics has revealed that 27% of Brits do not feel safe when walking home alone in their community.

The research revealed that in the year ending March 2015, 14% of men and 38% of women aged 16 and over in England and Wales admitted that they felt fairly or very unsafe when walking alone after dark. However, when compared with the same survey from March 2014, this is a significant improvement for women, dropping from 42%, but there is no statistical change for men.

During the summer months, the importance of home security can be somewhat overlooked. Whether its windows being left open due to hot weather or doors not being secured after spending time in the garden, we can help ensure your property isn’t vulnerable during the summer months.

Feeling safe in your local neighbourhood is another important factor contributing to an individual’s sense of satisfaction with the area around them. By feeling safe where you live, you can create a strong sense of community and research has shown that as a result, inhabitants are more likely to deliver higher rates of social participation, lower rates of crime, and improved physical and mental health amongst those living in that area*.

These findings form part of the ‘Life in the UK: 2016’ report, the fourth of its kind, delivered by the Measuring National Well-being programme. Divided into ten topic areas, such as Health, Education, Crime, and Natural Environment, the report highlights general national lifestyle trends and how we feel as a nation.

Here are some quick tips on keeping your home secure;

  • Repair your faulty alarm – If you have a faulty alarm that frequently goes off, get it fixed immediately and tell your neighbours that it’s been repaired. Many people ignore an alarm if there under the impression it’s still faulty.
  • Lock up your home – Even if only popping out for a short time, ensure all doors are securely locked. Many burglaries occur when entrances to properties are left unlocked.
  • Install security lighting – If the entrances to your home are dark or unlit, consider having security lighting installed with an infrared detector. Thieves don’t want to be observed trying to break into your property.
  • Avoid leaving notes on your door – Don’t leave notes for service people or family members on the door. These can suggest to a burglar that your home may be unoccupied.
  • Request ID from suspicious visitors – Ask for credentials from any sales-person who want to enter your home. Request that you see their formal identification before allowing entry. Many professional burglars use this technique when wanting to ‘scope’ out a property. If you’re in doubt, check with the person’s office before letting him or her in.
  • Make burglars think your home – Having your home appear occupied at all times can reduce the risk of burglary. Using timers to switch lights and radios on and off when you’re not at home can give the impression that the house is occupied.
  • Change locks when moving into new home – Ensure when moving into a new property that all locked are changed.
  • Are you keeping burglars well hidden? Trees located near windows may shield a burglar or enable easier access to windows. Consider your landscaping plan when reviewing your home security.
  • Lost your keys? If you lose your keys, ensure you replace the locks immediately.
  • Conceal all wiring – For the most effective alarm system, ensure all wiring is concealed. A professional burglar will look for places where they can disconnect or tamper with the security system.
